SPC Colleen Zamba highlights need for HR regulatory laws to boost Malawi’s productivity

Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Colleen Zamba emphasized the necessity of establishing laws to regulate human resource practices in Malawi to improve the nation’s efficiency and productivity. Zamba shared her insights this afternoon in Mangochi, where she inaugurated this year’s Institute of People Management in Malawi (IPMM) Annual General Conference.

Zamba announced her intent to collaborate with the Secretary for Human Resources and other key stakeholders to draft a bill addressing these regulatory needs, with the goal of presenting it in the next parliamentary session.

“The IPMM law will not only encourage best practices in human resources but will also enhance productivity across both public and private sectors,” Zamba stated. She stressed that Malawi’s progress relies on having a legal framework to ensure that professionals across various sectors are supported and protected in their roles.

IPMM President Godwin Sam Ng’oma echoed this vision, underscoring the importance of an Act that empowers IPMM to effectively oversee and elevate human resource management standards in the country.

“The passing of this bill will be a significant milestone, as it will grant IPMM the authority to promote and enforce best practices in the HR sector—a critical gap that needs filling,” Ng’oma remarked.

The proposed legislation is expected to formalize HR practices, foster accountability, and ensure that human capital is managed to its fullest potential, contributing to Malawi’s overall development.
