Ras Chikomeni Chirwa vows to run as independent in 2025 Presidential Election

Ras Chikomeni Chirwa, who was barred from contesting in the 2019 presidential election by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for failing to meet certain electoral requirements, has announced that he intends to run again in the upcoming 2025 elections as an independent candidate. This time, he promises a stronger campaign, having taken time to reflect on past challenges and the current state of the country under the Tonse Alliance leadership.

In an exclusive interview, Chirwa shared that he has spent the past years observing the political landscape and carefully planning his return to the race. He has also been analyzing the shortcomings that led to his disqualification in 2019, with the goal of addressing those gaps in his new bid. He expressed dissatisfaction with how the Tonse Alliance has governed Malawi, citing missed opportunities and a lack of impactful leadership.

Currently, Chirwa is establishing a committee to support his campaign, which he calls the “Jah Government.” The committee will be composed of supporters who he believes can help him secure the necessary votes to achieve the 90+1 threshold required to win the presidency. “I will soon call a press conference to introduce this committee and outline our key policies as we approach the election,” he revealed.

In a departure from his 2019 campaign, where he selected his mother as his running mate, Chirwa noted that he will not take the same approach this time. He explained that the political climate in 2025 requires a different strategy, and he plans to choose a running mate who aligns with his vision for Malawi’s future.

As Chikomeni Chirwa gears up for his candidacy, he remains hopeful that his independent platform will resonate with Malawians seeking change. He believes his campaign will offer a fresh perspective and alternative leadership aimed at addressing the country’s pressing issues.
