In a historic move, Lesego Chombo has been appointed as Botswana’s new Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, making her one of the youngest cabinet ministers in Africa. At only 26 years old, Chombo brings a fresh perspective and a dynamic approach to the role, representing a new generation of leaders in Botswana.
Chombo’s appointment is seen as a bold step towards bridging the gap between the government and the country’s young population, who have increasingly called for more youth representation in decision-making roles. Her background in community activism, as well as her work with various youth-focused organizations, has already earned her considerable respect among young Batswana. Known for her passion for gender equality and youth empowerment, Chombo has championed issues like women’s rights, youth employment, and access to education.
In her new role, Chombo aims to develop policies that directly address issues faced by Botswana’s youth and women, from unemployment to equal representation. “This is an opportunity to create tangible change,” Chombo shared in a recent interview. “I want every young person in Botswana to know that their voice matters, and together we can shape a future where opportunities are accessible to all.”
Her appointment is part of Botswana’s growing commitment to empowering young leaders and promoting gender equality at all levels of government. It also reflects the trust placed in young people to drive social and economic progress in the country. With her combination of youth and determination, Lesego Chombo is poised to bring transformative change to Botswana’s Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs, inspiring young people not only in Botswana but across Africa.
