MISA Malawi Takes Lead in Combating False Information Ahead of 2025 Elections

In a significant move to promote media integrity and combat misinformation, MISA Malawi recently appeared before the Media, Information, and Communications Committee of the Parliament of Malawi.

The organization provided updates on its initiatives aimed at tackling false information surrounding the 2025 General Elections.

Speaking during the meeting, Golden Matonga, Chairperson of MISA Malawi, emphasized the organization’s commitment to equipping journalists with fact-checking skills.

He said this endeavor ensures that credible information reaches the public, fostering an informed electorate.

Matonga added that by empowering journalists, MISA Malawi addresses the growing concern of misinformation.

“MISA Malawi is also launching iVerify, a pioneering fact-checking tool designed to identify and mitigate the spread of false information.

“This innovative solution will play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process,” he said.

In her remarks, Hon. Susan Dossi, Chairperson of the Media, Information, and Communications Committee, expressed Parliament’s concerns about the proliferation of false information.

Dossi acknowledged the media’s vital role in curbing misinformation, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts.

As a champion of free expression and access to information, MISA Malawi has consistently advocated for a free and independent media.

The organization has engaged with stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and civil society groups, to promote transparency and accountability.
