In a surprising move, Vice President Michael Usi has publicly endorsed the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)-led government in the upcoming elections.
Despite being a member of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), Usi expressed his support for the current government during a rally in Mwanza district on Monday.
Usi’s statement, “Boma ndilomweli,” translates to “the government is good,” implying that the people should not change the current government led by the MCP in the upcoming elections.
This endorsement has sparked criticism from some UTM members, who accuse Usi of being pro-MCP and not focusing on rebuilding the party during its challenging times.
In response to Usi’s endorsement, UTM Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala stated that the party will engage Usi to seek clarification on his statement.
This development comes after UTM announced its defection from the TONSE alliance following the death of its President, Dr. Saulos Chilima, in June this year.
Usi’s endorsement has significant implications for the upcoming elections and the political landscape in Malawi.
As a former UTM President, Usi’s support for the MCP-led government may influence the decisions of UTM supporters and potentially impact the party’s performance in the elections.
