Court Adjourns Case Involving AFORD Leader Enoch Chihana, Kambala, and Chaima Banda to January 2025

By Burnett Munthali

The Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe has adjourned the case involving AFORD leader Enoch Chihana, former Energy Minister Newton Kambala, and former Presidential Aide Chris Chaima Banda to January 8, 2025.

The adjournment followed the absence of Chihana’s legal representative due to unforeseen challenges, as explained by Kambala’s lawyer, Mtchuka George Mwale.

“The case has been postponed because Chihana’s lawyer could not appear in court today due to personal difficulties,” Mwale stated, adding that the State was expected to present two witnesses during the session.

The three accused were arrested in August 2021 on allegations of attempting to influence public officers to engage in corrupt practices. They are accused of interfering in the awarding of fuel procurement contracts at the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA).

The case has drawn significant public attention due to the high-profile nature of the individuals involved and the allegations surrounding government contract interference.

The court’s decision to adjourn provides both the defense and the State additional time to prepare their cases. The trial is expected to resume in January, with further witness testimonies anticipated.

This case continues to highlight issues of accountability and transparency in public procurement processes in Malawi. The public awaits the outcome with great interest, as it could set a precedent for handling similar cases in the future.
