NRB warehouse raises elections rigging claims

A sorting centre discovered by opposition parties is a normal operations centre by the National Registration Bureau,

Opposition parties have expressed dissatisifaction with the NRB handling of registration of potential voters, accusing it of helping the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to rig the 2025 elections.

On Wednesday morning opposition MPs were tipped that a warehouse belonging to the National Food Reserve Agency was housing a ‘rigging’ centre and dozens of national identity cards were being logged into national data centre.

Our team has verified that the centre is a normal centre sorting out cards on arrival from India for distribution and does not print new cards.

“The cameras are scanners for verfying the bar code. Someone at NRB wanted to cause mischief,” explained a technician we found on the site.

The offices are shared with the E Government and NFRA after the National Intelligence Service failed to occupy their space.

The incident reveals the levels of trust state institution has among electoral stakeholders.
