A violent clash erupted in Area 24, Lilongwe District, on December 9, 2024, resulting in the torching of property worth millions of kwacha and leaving several young men in critical condition.
Kawale Police Station has condemned the incident and launched an investigation into the matter.
According to Sub Inspector Precious Mabvuto Phiri, Public Relations Officer for Kawale Police Station, a group of young men went on a rampage, attacking people with panga knives.
Phiri said the motive behind the attack is still unknown.
“During the melee, three young men, including a 10-year-old boy, were severely hacked and rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital in critical condition,” he said.
He said the following day, irate villagers retaliated against the suspected ring leader, Nelson Kumchima. Although police arrived at the scene to calm the situation, they found that the villagers had already set fire to Kumchima’s property, including two cars, a house, two motorcycles, and household items.
Kawale Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are calling on the public to collaborate with them.
“We have launched investigations to uncover what transpired and bring perpetrators to book,” said Sub Inspector Phiri.
The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
