Thyolo District Council has officially launched its lean season relief distribution exercise, targeting 70,599 households across the district. The launch took place today at Khonjeni in the area of Traditional Authority Kapichi.

As part of the initiative, each beneficiary household will receive a 50-kilogramme bag of maize every month for a period of four months. The program aims to provide relief to vulnerable families struggling to meet their food needs during this challenging season.

Speaking after the launch, Thyolo District Commissioner Hudson Kuphanga expressed satisfaction with the council’s efforts to address food insecurity. “We are happy to cushion households that were desperate for relief,” he said.

Joyce Benson, one of the beneficiaries, shared her gratitude for the program. “We were surviving on mangoes. But now, we will be able to have proper meals,” she said, expressing excitement over the relief maize.

The lean season relief exercise is a vital intervention for Thyolo District, as many households continue to face food shortages due to various challenges, including erratic weather patterns and poor harvests. The distribution is expected to significantly improve food security for the affected families.

This initiative underscores the importance of community-based interventions in tackling hunger and providing immediate support to those in need during critical periods.
