Mangochi, Malawi – Kefas Peter Kanyama, aged 51, was arrested in Mangochi after being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and exhibiting violent behavior. The police confirmed the incident and reported that Kanyama is from the village of Kuweruza, T/A Changata in Thyolo District.
According to Police Spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi, the arrest follows a series of alarming incidents where Kanyama had been evading capture since December 12. The situation began after he reportedly fired a gun twice in the air at a local event in Koche, Mangochi, where he had been participating in a competition.
“Reports indicate that on the day in question, Kanyama arrived at the location during the evening, where he encountered two police officers from Liwonde and some tax officials. Without warning, he got out of his Toyota Fortuner vehicle, with a rifle in hand, and fired two shots into the air,” Daudi explained.
Kanyama then entered his vehicle, retrieved a second firearm, a pistol, and fired more shots into the air. When police officers approached to question him about his actions, he threatened to shoot a police officer on the spot, further escalating the situation.
Following this, the police pursued Kanyama, who fled the scene in his vehicle. He managed to escape temporarily, but later was apprehended in Mangochi town as he attempted to drive away.
Kanyama has been charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and disturbing the peace. His arrest has sparked discussions about the growing concerns over the misuse of firearms and public safety.
Police have assured the public that further investigations are underway and Kanyama will be brought to court soon to face the charges. Authorities are also urging citizens to report any suspicious activity, as part of ongoing efforts to improve security in the region.
