Lilongwe, Malawi – The Road Safety Foundation (Rosaf) has urged motorcycle operators to prioritize their safety and the safety of others by wearing helmets, using reflectors, and refraining from riding under the influence of alcohol. The call comes as part of a road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents, particularly during the festive season.
The campaign, organized in collaboration with the Malawi Police Service and the Kabaza Association of Malawi, was launched to address the rising number of road accidents involving motorcycles. Speaking at the event, Rosaf’s Director of Operations, Noel Mhango, emphasized the importance of responsible road use.
“Motorcycle riders play a significant role in transportation across Malawi, but unfortunately, they are also among the most vulnerable road users,” Mhango said. “This initiative is aimed at encouraging safer practices, such as wearing helmets and using reflectors, which can significantly reduce the risk of fatal accidents.”
The festive season typically sees an increase in road traffic, and motorcycle riders are often seen as more susceptible to accidents due to factors like speeding, alcohol consumption, and lack of proper safety gear. Mhango highlighted that wearing helmets and following road safety rules can go a long way in saving lives.
As part of its ongoing efforts to improve road safety, Rosaf also announced a training program for next year, which will focus on educating road users about the Highway Code and safe road practices. The training, which will offer subsidized fees, is set to start on January 10, 2025. Participants will pay a reduced fee of MK100,000, covering tuition and MK56,000 for licensing.
“The training is designed to equip motorcycle operators with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the roads safely. This will contribute to reducing road accidents and ensuring safer travels for everyone,” Mhango said.
The initiative is expected to continue throughout the year, with more campaigns and training opportunities aimed at promoting safer road usage across the country. Rosaf is committed to its mission of improving road safety and protecting the lives of all road users.
