A group of religious leaders, whose specific denominations remain undisclosed, has written a letter to the government expressing their concerns about various security matters affecting the nation.

Among the key issues highlighted in the letter is the influx of Mozambican nationals into Malawi as they flee armed conflicts in their home country. The religious leaders cite reports indicating that numerous prisoners have escaped from Mozambican jails, raising concerns about potential threats to Malawi’s security. They are urging the government to implement stricter border security measures and to thoroughly vet those entering the country.

Additionally, the leaders have expressed worry about the ongoing dispute between Malawi and Tanzania over Lake Malawi. They have called on the government to provide regular updates to the public on the status of negotiations and the steps being taken to resolve the issue amicably.

The leaders also extended their gratitude to former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi for his proactive engagement in seeking peaceful solutions to the Lake Malawi dispute. They praised his example of leadership and commitment to dialogue and peacebuilding.

In conclusion, the religious leaders have urged the government to prioritize national security and maintain transparency on critical matters affecting the country’s stability. They believe that addressing these issues decisively will not only protect Malawi but also contribute to peace and stability within the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
