Court grants bail to Suleman

Senior Resident Magistrate Andrew Mmanga has bestawed bail to Sameer Suleman, a prominent member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Suleman who arrested on Monday 5th January 2024 is accused of authoring a letter allegedly plotting to harm Richard Chimwendo Banda, Zikhale Ng’oma, and Steven Malondera.

Suleman’s arrest comes amidst a heated political climate in Malawi.

The DPP and the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have been embroiled in a series of public feuds, with accusations of intimidation, violence, and defamation flying back and forth.

In his ruling, Magistrate Mmanga stated that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to grant Suleman bail.

The magistrate also ordered Suleman to pay a cash bail of K500,000 and provide a surety bond of K2 million.

The condition of bail to Suleman is seen as a significant development in the case against him.

It remains to be seen how the DPP and its supporters will react to the ruling.

As the case unfolds, it is clear that the political landscape in Malawig will continue to be shaped by the ongoing tensions between the DPP and the MCP.
