DPP rebukes Jessie Kabwila’s allegations on Peter Mutharika’s leadership

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has strongly criticized Jessie Kabwila, the spokesperson for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), over her recent remarks concerning DPP leader Peter Mutharika. Kabwila alleged that the DPP was exploiting Mutharika, despite his advanced age, by pressuring him to lead the party, a claim the DPP has dismissed as baseless and misleading.

In a statement released by DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba, the party described Kabwila’s allegations as unfounded and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of their leader. Namalomba emphasized that Mutharika, the former president of Malawi, voluntarily chose to continue serving the nation, driven by his passion and commitment to the country’s development. He further highlighted the overwhelming support Mutharika continues to receive from Malawians, which demonstrates his enduring influence and leadership appeal.

“The allegations made by Kabwila are mere fabrications meant to distract the public from the real issues facing the nation under the current administration. Mutharika’s decision to lead the DPP is a testament to his dedication to the people of Malawi, not a result of coercion,” Namalomba stated.

The DPP did not stop at dismissing the accusations but also called attention to what it described as serious governance failures under the MCP-led government. Namalomba suggested that the international community should examine Malawi’s current leadership, including its alleged human rights violations, and consider bringing these matters to global human rights institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Kabwila had recently spoken on Capital FM, where she hinted at taking the DPP to the ICC for allegedly mistreating Mutharika by compelling him to remain in active politics despite his advanced age. She claimed that the party was violating his rights by refusing to let him retire.

Responding to these comments, the DPP defended Mutharika’s leadership, stating that his continued political involvement is neither forced nor exploitative but reflects his willingness to contribute to the betterment of Malawi. The party stressed that the real human rights abuses were being perpetuated by the MCP administration, citing growing economic hardships, suppression of freedoms, and poor governance as pressing concerns.

The DPP’s response underscores its focus on repositioning itself as a credible alternative to the current government ahead of the 2025 general elections. With Peter Mutharika at the helm, the party continues to project a vision of restoring stability, promoting economic growth, and safeguarding the rights of all Malawians.

As the political battle intensifies, the DPP has made it clear that it will not allow baseless allegations to distract it from addressing the challenges facing the nation and offering hope to Malawians seeking change.
