Jenda Police Station in Mzimba District achieved a significant milestone in 2024, reducing the crime rate by 31.1% compared to the previous year. According to the station’s Public Relations Officer, Macfarlane Mseteka, the number of recorded cases dropped from 663 in 2023 to 457 in 2024, marking a decrease of 206 cases.

Mseteka attributed the success to intensified policing efforts and community engagement initiatives. The station successfully arrested 282 suspects during the year, with 181 of them prosecuted in court, resulting in various convictions. This proactive approach by law enforcement has been pivotal in maintaining peace and order in the region.

Despite the progress, the station continues to face challenges, particularly with financial constraints that hinder the handling of pending cases. “We still have 44 cases waiting for trial due to inadequate financial resources,” Mseteka explained. He highlighted the station’s difficulty in transporting suspects to the Mzimba Magistrate Court, which is located far from Jenda.

Jenda Police Station operates with a workforce of 193 officers who serve a population of 273,662 people across five Traditional Authorities: Mzukuzuku, M’mbelwa, Mabilabo, Mzikubola, and Khosolo. The vast area and large population present logistical and operational challenges, yet the station remains committed to ensuring the safety of its community.

Mseteka emphasized the need for additional support, particularly financial resources, to sustain the station’s efforts and address existing limitations. “We are doing our best with the resources at hand, but support from stakeholders and the government would go a long way in improving our operations,” he said.

The reduction in crime has been a source of encouragement for the police and the community. Residents in the area have praised the efforts of the Jenda Police Station, noting a sense of increased security and confidence in law enforcement.

As the station looks forward to 2025, it aims to build on the successes of the past year while addressing the challenges that remain. With adequate resources and continued collaboration with the community, Jenda Police Station is determined to further reduce crime and ensure the safety and well-being of the people it serves.
