Political analyst Burnett Munthali has emphasized that the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure economic stability and prosperity for all citizens. He argues that this goal cannot be achieved if leadership in key ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) fails to deliver.
Munthali has backed President Lazarus Chakwera’s decision to dismiss Minister of Trade and Industry Sosten Alfred Gwengwe, stating that the move was necessary due to Gwengwe’s failure to address the rising cost of essential commodities. He noted that Gwengwe remained silent while prices continued to skyrocket, leaving consumers and businesses struggling.
“The removal of Gwengwe is not about personal failure, but rather the urgent need to implement policies that will bring immediate relief to struggling businesses and consumers amid the ongoing economic crisis,” Munthali said.
He described President Chakwera’s decision as bold and necessary, pointing out that Gwengwe had served as minister for four years, but the economic pressures facing Malawi required fresh energy, innovative ideas, and proactive leadership.
“When the people cry out for change, a responsible leader must act. This is exactly what President Chakwera has done by appointing Vitumbiko Mumba, a decision many Malawians believe should have been made in the first cabinet of 2020,” Munthali remarked.
He praised Mumba’s strong record from his previous role in the Ministry of Labour, where he demonstrated commitment, efficiency, and the ability to handle complex issues. According to Munthali, Mumba’s appointment comes at a critical time when Malawians are experiencing severe economic hardships, signaling that the government is listening to the concerns of its people.
“For too long, vendors, small-scale business owners, and ordinary citizens have struggled under the burden of rising commodity prices, including the cost of second-hand clothes, which provide a livelihood for many,” Munthali noted.
He pointed out that the recent protests by vendors at Parliament sent a clear message that Malawians are tired of economic hardships and are demanding leadership that responds to their needs. He urged citizens to support Mumba in his new role as Minister of Trade and Industry.
“We have confidence that Mumba’s leadership will bring much-needed reforms in trade and industry, focusing on stabilizing market prices, improving business policies, and ensuring that local traders are not left behind,” Munthali said.
He further urged Malawians not to lose hope, emphasizing that while change is never easy, it is necessary. He expressed optimism that with strong leadership, sound policies, and national commitment, Malawi will overcome its economic challenges.
“With unity and determination, we will rise, rebuild, and succeed,” Munthali concluded.
