The Malawi National Sports Council (MNCS) has handed over the management of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon to the Athletics Malawi, citing the organization’s proven track record in successfully implementing several events.
Senior Sports and Recreation, Felix Chiyola, confirmed the development at a press briefing in Mzuzu on Thursday.
“The Athletics Malawi will fully manage this year’s event, having won the confidence of the Malawi National Council of Sports. They have successfully managed several events,” said Chiyola.
This year’s event will be co-chaired by Peter Mumba and Adron Msowoya, marking a transition in the organization’s management to Athletics Malawi.
Msowoya acknowledged that there had been some misunderstandings within the association, but these had been ironed out to the satisfaction of the council.
“There have been some misunderstandings at our association, which were ironed out to the satisfaction of the council,” he said.
The event is open to athletes and individuals who, although unqualified, have an interest in participating in light of the current economic downturn, registration fees have been waived for non-affiliated participants, while affiliated athletes will pay K2,000.
The event will maintain its cash prizes, with the champion taking home K1.5 million, K1 million for the second place, and K500,000 for the third position.
A health walk component slated for this Saturday has also been included to ensure maximum participation from athletes and city dwellers.
The Malawi Defence Force (Moyale Barracks) will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth management of the event which will start at exactly 6:00 am, with no registration fee required, building hype for the main event.
