Renowned politician Kamlepo Kalua and former Principal Secretary Dr. Joseph Mwandidya visited the offices of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Lilongwe.
Their visit was in response to the arrest of Member of Parliament Yeremiah Chihana, who is currently being detained by the bureau.
Kalua and Mwandidya’s presence at the ACB premises sparked interest among onlookers and media personnel who were eager to understand the nature of their visit.
It is believed that the two figures went to the ACB not just out of concern, but also to inquire about the legal and procedural developments surrounding Chihana’s arrest.
Yeremiah Chihana, who represents the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), was apprehended by ACB operatives following what the bureau described as serious allegations.
The visit by Kamlepo Kalua and Dr. Mwandidya is seen as a political statement of solidarity, indicating growing concerns within opposition circles over how arrests are being handled by the anti-corruption body.
Chihana has been one of the most outspoken critics of the Malawi Congress Party-led government, often highlighting issues of public mismanagement and corruption.
Observers say the arrest of Chihana could have wider political implications, especially in light of his frequent criticisms of government operations both inside and outside Parliament.
Kalua, known for his fearless stance on governance issues, has previously clashed with authorities during previous administrations, and his appearance at the ACB further emphasizes the potential tension this case may ignite.
Dr. Joseph Mwandidya, a respected figure in public service, has also voiced concerns in the past about transparency and justice in state institutions.
Their joint appearance has raised questions about whether the ACB is operating independently or under political pressure, a matter that continues to generate debate in civil society and political spaces.
The ACB has not yet released a comprehensive statement detailing the charges against Chihana, leaving the public speculating on the nature and validity of the arrest.
As events unfold, many Malawians are watching closely, hoping that the rule of law, justice, and due process will guide the handling of the case involving Yeremiah Chihana.
