President Lazarus Chakwera has called upon members of the media to commit themselves to upholding accuracy, fairness, and balance in their work.

He made these remarks during a special breakfast he hosted for journalists in the city of Mzuzu.

The breakfast event formed part of the official commemorations for this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

During his address, President Chakwera emphasized that the media holds a vital responsibility in safeguarding democracy by ensuring that the public is well-informed with truthful and verified information.

He acknowledged the challenging environment in which journalists operate today, especially in the face of rising misinformation and disinformation.

The President pointed out that digital platforms, particularly social media, have become breeding grounds for fake news, which often confuses and misleads the public.

He therefore appealed to the media fraternity to be vigilant in distinguishing facts from falsehoods and to resist the temptation of sensationalism.

President Chakwera also stressed the importance of collaboration between the media and the government in fighting the spread of harmful information.

He noted that when the media and the state work hand in hand, they can help restore public trust and foster national unity.

Chakwera said that freedom of the press must not only be celebrated but also protected and guided by principles of responsibility and professionalism.

He commended journalists for their courage and commitment to truth-telling, often at great personal risk.

The President further reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting media freedoms in Malawi.

He said his administration recognizes the media as a critical pillar in the country’s democratic framework.

Chakwera concluded by encouraging media practitioners to remain ethical, courageous, and focused on the public good in all their reporting.

The breakfast engagement drew journalists from various media houses across the Northern Region, many of whom welcomed the President’s gesture and remarks.

The event was characterized by open dialogue, mutual appreciation, and a shared resolve to strengthen Malawi’s media landscape for the betterment of the nation.
