DPP warns: independent aspirants will be stripped of membership

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued a strong warning to its members who are considering running as independent candidates in the upcoming general elections.

This follows reports that some aspiring MPs in the Southern and Eastern regions, after either failing to win or deliberately avoiding the recent party primary elections, have declared intentions to stand independently.

In a formal communication dated 4th May 2025, Secretary General Peter Mukhitho reminded all party members of the binding nature of Article 24 (2)(u) of the party’s constitution.

According to this provision, any individual who chooses to contest an election as an independent automatically loses their membership in the DPP.

The party argues that such measures are necessary to protect its unity, discipline, and organizational strength as Malawi heads toward a critical electoral period.

Mukhitho emphasized that loyalty is a core value of the DPP, and members must remain committed to the internal democratic processes and outcomes of the party.

He urged those dissatisfied with primary results to resolve their concerns through the proper internal mechanisms rather than defecting.

The DPP has reiterated that any member who announces or files nomination as an independent candidate will be immediately removed from the party’s register.

Officials say this decision is part of broader efforts to ensure consistency and discipline as the party prepares for a national campaign.

Moreover, the party is calling on all its followers to stay united under the shared vision of building a democratic and prosperous Malawi.

In taking this hard stance, the DPP hopes to discourage fragmentation and reaffirm the importance of collective action over individual ambition.
