Minister of Trade, Vitumbiko Mumba has officially resigned from his senior leadership role within the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The announcement was made through a post on his Facebook page, where he declared that his followers deserved to know his decision from now and into the future.
“I cannot be part of a group engaged in divisive politics. My focus is on serving the people, not engaging in political battles. I remain loyal to President Lazarus Chakwera, not to individuals who seek to wield unchecked power. I will reveal more once the ongoing court case concludes,” Mumba wrote.
In his statement, Mumba sharply criticized the MCP’s National Executive Committee (NEC), accusing it of lacking competent leadership.
He described many NEC members as corrupt and disruptive.
Agai, Mumba has emphasized that he remains a regular member of MCP.
His resignation comes in the wake of ongoing tensions and reported internal conflicts with the party’s Secretary General, Hon. Richard Chimwendo Banda.
Political analyst Wonderful Mkhutche, speaking to Times360 Malawi, weighed in on the situation, asserting that Mumba likely has no future in the MCP, especially given that he was never fully embraced by some members of the party.
Mkhutche explained that Mumba faced closed doors within the party structure and was forced to seek alternative political paths.
Said Mkhutche, “In the end, Mumba might find himself contesting as an independent candidate, as many of his opportunities within MCP appear blocked.”
