Suleman Chitera, Blantyre, Malawi – June 20, 2025
Former President of Malawi and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, returned to the country on Thursday through Chileka International Airport, following a brief visit to South Africa.
Hundreds of party supporters, clad in DPP colours and waving flags, welcomed the leader with songs and chants of encouragement ahead of the 2025 general elections.
DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba told reporters that Mutharika’s trip was solely for party business, specifically to secure financial support for the party’s upcoming election campaign.
“This was a strategic mission. The president met with key allies and potential donors who are committed to supporting the DPP’s vision for Malawi,” Namalomba said.
“Let me make it clear. Professor Mutharika was never hospitalized. These are lies being peddled by people who fear his return to power,” Namalomba insisted.
Looking healthy and composed, Mutharika briefly addressed the crowd outside the airport, urging unity within the party and pledging to restore economic stability, job creation, and rule of law if elected.
“We are back, and we are ready,” Mutharika declared. “Malawi deserves better, and the DPP is prepared to lead again with discipline, vision, and strength.”
As political temperatures rise ahead of the polls, Mutharika’s presence is expected to re-energize DPP’s grassroots structures
The DPP is yet to announce the official date for its campaign, but Namalomba hinted that preparations are underway to roll out the campaign machinery in full force.
