The outgoing United States Chargé d’Affaires to Malawi, Amy Diaz, has bid farewell to several key opposition presidential contenders ahead of the country’s highly anticipated general elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.

As part of her farewell engagements, Diaz held meetings with leaders of various political parties, including Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) President Peter Mutharika, People’s Party (PP) President Joyce Banda, United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi, and UTM President Dalitso Kabambe, among others.

In a statement released after the meetings, Diaz emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, fostering peaceful political competition, and avoiding violence as the nation approaches the polls.

“During my discussions with Malawian political leaders, I stressed the critical need to maintain peace and respect for democratic institutions during the election period,” Diaz said. “A stable and inclusive democratic process is essential for Malawi’s continued development.”

Her message comes at a time when political temperatures are beginning to rise, with several parties intensifying preparations for what is expected to be a closely contested election.

The farewell meetings were also seen as a reaffirmation of the United States’ commitment to supporting democracy and good governance in Malawi. Diaz, who has served in Malawi since 2022, will be succeeded by a new envoy expected to continue strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
