Biyela Defends Gabadinho Mhango’s Signing: “I Want Goals, Not Saints”

Durban, July 14, 2025 — Richards Bay FC chairperson Sifiso Jomo Biyela has come out strongly in defense of the club’s latest signing, Malawian striker Gabadinho Mhango, amid public criticism over the player’s alleged off-field lifestyle.

Biyela dismissed suggestions that Mhango’s partying habits could negatively impact his performance, insisting that a player’s private life should not be used to judge their professional potential.

“Show me a PSL player who doesn’t drink alcohol?” Biyela said bluntly during a media interaction. “Players who drink often score goals. What do I want? I want them to score, not change their lifestyle.”

The outspoken chairman emphasized that his responsibility is to bring the best out of players, not to act as a moral authority.

“I’m not a rehab, and I’m not Jesus,” he added. “I’m here to support my players and make sure they deliver on the pitch. That’s what matters.”

Mhango, now 31, is no stranger to South African football. His 11-year career in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has seen him don the jerseys of seven different clubs, scoring over 62 goals in the process. His move to Richards Bay is seen as both a fresh challenge and a vote of confidence in his ability to still perform at the top level.

Biyela’s unapologetic stance sends a clear message: talent and output come first.

“If Mhango delivers goals for us, that’s all I care about. People must stop being hypocrites,” Biyela concluded.

The DStv Premiership club is hopeful Mhango’s experience and hunger will boost their attacking force in the coming season — lifestyle questions aside.
