Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) leader Enock Chihana has blamed political greed for the growing number of presidential aspirants, saying Malawi’s small size does not warrant such a crowded race.
Speaking today to a cheering crowd at Kameza in Blantyre, Chihana expressed concern over what he called the self-serving ambitions of politicians, which have pushed the number of presidential hopefuls to 18 ahead of the September 16 polls.
“Malawi is too small for this many people to be contesting for the presidency. This only shows the greed that has overtaken our politics,” Chihana said.
He told the gathering that, if elected, his administration would quickly end the country’s persistent struggles with food shortages, fuel scarcity, foreign exchange woes, and fertilizer supply problems — issues he said have crippled Malawi for years.
Chihana also used the platform to call for peace ahead of the elections, urging Malawians to reject political violence and remain united despite their differences.
“As we approach these elections, I appeal to every Malawian to uphold peace. Let us not allow politics to divide us,” he added.
The presidential race is heating up as the September 16 election date draws closer, with political parties intensifying their campaigns across the country.
