Karim Makes U-Turn, Bows to People’s Call to Contest Again

By Suleman Chitera, Chikwawa,

In a dramatic political twist, Chikwawa South MP Ilyas Abdul Karim has announced his decision to seek re-election in the September 16 polls — barely weeks after declaring he would not contest.

Karim made the revelation today during a special meeting with community leaders, chiefs, and religious figures who summoned him to clarify his earlier withdrawal. The leaders reportedly pressed him to reconsider, citing his decade-long service and the trust people have in him.

Explaining his change of heart, Karim said his initial decision was motivated by a desire to concentrate on personal business ventures and to recognize that political office is never permanent. But after listening to the concerns and wishes of the community, he said he had resolved to contest — this time as an independent candidate.

“I stepped aside in good faith, but I have heard the voice of the people. I cannot ignore them,” Karim said, attracting applause from those in attendance.

Karim’s move comes as the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), under which he has served, had already endorsed another candidate following his withdrawal. His decision to run as an independent is now setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown in the southern district.

Community and church leaders openly praised Karim during the meeting, describing him as a proven leader who had championed development projects in the area.

With the campaign season heating up, Karim’s return is likely to reshape the political landscape in Chikwawa South — pitting him against his former party and new challengers.
