Blantyre — Former President Peter Mutharika has urged Malawians to embrace peace and unity during the campaign period ahead of the highly anticipated general elections slated for 16 September.
Mutharika, who will contest as the presidential candidate for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), issued the appeal today as part of his message marking his 85th birthday.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Shadreck Namalomba, Mutharika stressed the importance of violence-free campaigns, calling on all political leaders to uphold democratic values and exercise maturity and restraint as they engage with the electorate.
“He wants every political leader to lead by example and ensure their supporters promote peace, not violence,” Namalomba said “His message is clear — the future of Malawi lies in unity, not division.”
Mutharika’s statement comes at a critical time when political tensions are reportedly rising in various parts of the country, sparking concerns among citizens and observers. Several civil society groups and religious leaders have already condemned the increasing incidents of political intolerance, urging all sides to exercise caution.
With the campaign season now in full swing, Mutharika’s call adds to the growing voices advocating for civility, tolerance, and respect for democratic processes as Malawi gears up for one of its most closely watched elections in recent years.
