The Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, yesterday evening delivered a public lecture focusing on the theme “Code of Ethics in Malawi’s Construction Industry.”
The event took place at Comesa Hall, attracting a diverse audience that included students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), politicians, and key industry stakeholders.
Mumba’s lecture addressed pressing concerns within the construction sector, emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct, transparency, and accountability in fostering sustainable growth and investor confidence.
The Minister underscored that adherence to ethical standards is crucial for improving service delivery, curbing corruption, and ensuring that infrastructure projects meet quality benchmarks for national development.
He highlighted the need for robust regulatory frameworks and industry self-regulation mechanisms to eliminate malpractice and promote fairness in awarding contracts and implementing projects.
According to Mumba, unethical practices in the construction industry not only derail progress but also undermine the aspirations of Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development vision.
The public lecture provided an opportunity for interactive discussions, allowing students and industry experts to engage the Minister on strategies for reforming the sector.
Stakeholders in attendance commended the initiative, noting that such platforms are vital for fostering dialogue between policymakers, academia, and the private sector.
The lecture forms part of an ongoing series of thought leadership engagements championed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to promote transparency, innovation, and sustainable economic practices.
This was the second edition in the series, following a similar event titled “People Over Politics,” which was held at the University of Malawi in Zomba earlier in April this year.
Observers say the discussions from these lectures are expected to inform policy direction and contribute to shaping a more ethical and competitive business environment in Malawi.
As the session concluded, participants expressed optimism that continued collaboration between government and stakeholders will help address systemic challenges in the construction industry and enhance the country’s investment climate.
