Borehole Brings Hope to Water-Scarce Mgona Communities

Communities around Mgona Village in the area of Senior Chief Tengani, Nsanje, have received a major relief in their long-standing struggle for clean water, following the donation of a K9 million borehole by Open Door Missions.

The borehole, which was officially handed over on Sunday by the mission’s president, Wayne Patullo, is expected to ease the burden of women and children who have been walking long distances in search of safe drinking water.

“We decided to make this donation after observing how women in this area suffer to access clean water,” said Patullo. “As a faith-based organization, we believe it is our duty not only to meet the spiritual needs of the people but also to address their physical needs.”

Village Head Chinguli, whose community will directly benefit from the borehole, expressed gratitude for the gesture, urging his subjects to take proper care of the facility. “This is a rare gift to our community. Let us make sure we use it wisely and preserve it for future generations,” he said.

The donation comes at a critical time when many communities in coastal Nsanje still rely on unsafe water sources such as rivers and open wells—exposing them to waterborne diseases like cholera.

With this borehole, the people of Mgona and surrounding villages are hopeful their water woes will soon be a thing of the past.
