In an exclusive interview with SG PRESS on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his residence, Peter Mukhito, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aspiring Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City Central Constituency, pledged to champion youth development initiatives if elected in the September 16, 2025 general elections.
Mukhito said he is committed to equipping young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills so they can contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
He observed that many youths are currently idle, which contributes to a rise in immoral behavior. He believes that through targeted youth empowerment programs, they can become productive and responsible citizens.
Mukhito lamented that although former President and DPP leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika established technical colleges across the country to train the youth in various skills, most of these institutions are now non-operational.
He also promised to prioritize access to clean and potable water in the constituency. He expressed concern that some residents still rely on unsafe water sources, calling the situation unacceptable—especially in a constituency that houses the State House.
Mukhito further pledged to construct two dispensaries in the area, pointing out that the only reliable health facility currently available is in Area 18. He noted that it is too far for many residents and overwhelmed due to high demand.
As part of his broader development agenda, Mukhito vowed to reduce poverty among women by launching group-based business training programs. These groups, he explained, would be supported to start small-scale businesses and share profits to sustain their livelihoods.
“I have many friends and I know how to write funding proposals for development projects. With support from the people, we can transform Lilongwe City Central Constituency,” said Mukhito.
He promised to walk side by side with the people from Day One of his leadership, committing to visible improvements within five years. These would include road upgrades and the installation of streetlights to enhance safety for road users.
Mukhito urged constituents to give him a chance, just as they have tried other leaders before. He emphasized that he doesn’t claim to be more intelligent than his predecessors but strongly believes in teamwork and community spirit.
“If we support each other, even the little we have can make a big difference in other people’s lives,” he said.
