Political analyst tells MBC: “Malawi deserves better”

By Vincent Gunde

Political analyst Burnett Munthali has urged the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General George Kasakula and the entire management to wake up, warning that they are inadvertently campaigning for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Munthali observed that the producers of the “Timvetse” programme appear to have an agenda to discredit the DPP in an attempt to erode public trust in the party ahead of the September 16, 2025 elections. However, he argued that this approach is backfiring and only strengthening the DPP’s popularity.

He questioned MBC’s editorial judgment, asking why the DPP seems to be the only party receiving significant attention on the “Timvetse” programme, while the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is largely ignored. Munthali noted that instead of informing the public about what President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has achieved in five years, MBC is focused on attacking Mutharika’s running mate, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah.

Speaking through SG Press, Munthali challenged MBC’s management with tough questions: “Are people struggling to make ends meet today because of Jane Ansah? Is there a fuel shortage because of Jane Ansah? Has the price of sugar gone up because of Jane Ansah?”

He called on MBC to stop insulting their own intelligence by sowing confusion among viewers and listeners. “Malawians deserve better,” he stated plainly.

Munthali lamented that at a time when the cost of living is suffocating citizens, MBC continues to broadcast propaganda rather than focus on real issues. He told Kasakula directly that the silence on MCP’s achievements is, in itself, a loud endorsement of DPP and Mutharika.

He went further to argue that programmes like “Timvetse” are a threat to democracy, as they mislead citizens rather than inform them. “Malawi needs a national broadcaster that informs, not misleads; that educates, not manipulates; and that uplifts truth, not propaganda,” he said.

“While you are busy playing the politics of self-deception through the Timvetse programme, Malawians are suffering. Wake up, MBC, before it’s too late. May truth rise above the noise, and may Malawi rise above mediocrity,” Munthali concluded.
