Blantyre, Malawi – A political rift is brewing as a group calling itself Friends of Atupele Muluzi has demanded an immediate apology from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) senior official Sameer Sulemani over remarks they describe as “attacks” on their leader, Atupele Muluzi.
Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, the group’s chairperson, Stain Chidothe, said they view the attacks as a collective insult.
“An attack on Atupele is an attack on all of us. We urge the DPP to leave our pangolin alone,” said Chidothe, reading from the group’s statement.
The Friends of Atupele Muluzi also took aim at DPP president Peter Mutharika for naming former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah as his running mate in the September 2025 elections. The group claims the move reflects the DPP’s past habit of placing party-aligned individuals in key state positions when it held power.

The DPP has yet to issue a response to the accusations.
