Malawi Elections 2025: Survey Shows Peter Mutharika Leading Ahead of Lazarus Chakwera

By Suleman Chitera

A fresh opinion poll by the Institute of Public Opinion and Research (IPOR) has revealed the current voting intentions of Malawians ahead of the 2025 general elections. The survey indicates that Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is in the lead, while Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) follows closely.

Key Findings of the Survey

41% of Malawians say they intend to vote for Peter Mutharika (DPP).

31% support Lazarus Chakwera (MCP).

6% back Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

3% prefer Atupele Muluzi of the United Democratic Front (UDF).

2% say they would vote for Joyce Banda, former President and leader of the People’s Party (PP).

According to IPOR, the survey only reflects current public opinion and does not guarantee the actual outcome of the 2025 elections.

IPOR’s Call for Unity and Voter Participation

The research institute emphasized that election results may differ from opinion polls and urged all political parties, leaders, and stakeholders to encourage mass voter turnout. Civic education and participation, IPOR noted, are critical for strengthening democracy in Malawi.

What This Means for the 2025 Elections

The figures suggest that Peter Mutharika and Lazarus Chakwera remain the two main contenders in the race. However, the presence of Dalitso Kabambe, Atupele Muluzi, and Joyce Banda could influence voter dynamics, particularly in swing constituencies.

With only months to go before Malawians cast their ballots, political campaigns are expected to intensify. Analysts believe coalition-building and grassroots mobilization will play a key role in determining the final outcome
