Lilongwe, Malawi – United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has assured Malawians that his party is entering the upcoming election as an independent contender and has not formed any political alliance, contrary to widespread speculation.

Speaking at a whistle-stop rally in Nchesi, Lilongwe, Muluzi stressed that the UDF is determined to chart its own path with a clear mission to provide leadership that addresses Malawi’s pressing economic challenges.

“UDF Is Not Under Any Party’s Wing”

Muluzi dismissed claims suggesting that UDF is aligning itself with bigger parties ahead of the polls. He said:

“The UDF is not under the wing of any other party. Our desire is to lead this country and solve the economic hardships people are facing.”

Foreign Exchange Shortage Hurting Malawians

In his address, Muluzi also criticized how Malawi’s ongoing foreign exchange crisis is being exploited by a few wealthy individuals. He alleged that some well-connected elites are accessing scarce foreign currency from banks only to resell it at inflated rates on the black market, worsening the burden on ordinary citizens.

The UDF leader further expressed gratitude to God for giving him opportunities to learn leadership from an early age. He acknowledged the influence of past leaders such as Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda and Dr. Bakili Muluzi, saying their legacy continues to inspire his vision for Malawi’s future.
