Lilongwe, Malawi – The Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has dismissed claims by President Lazarus Chakwera that some individuals are deliberately raising the prices of goods to make his government look weak ahead of upcoming elections.

CAMA Executive Director, John Kapito, emphasized that the President is being misinformed by people close to him, including advisers within the government.

“The President is aware of the factors that cause prices of goods to increase or decrease. Government departments provide accurate information to the President. Those who exploit opportunities to import goods and sell them at inflated prices are already part of the system, as external actors cannot influence prices,” Kapito said.

President Chakwera has repeatedly spoken at public rallies, claiming that price hikes are politically motivated to undermine his performance in the forthcoming polls. CAMA, however, insists that these allegations are baseless and that market price fluctuations are influenced by broader economic factors, not political interference.
