Atupele Muluzi Demands Fair Elections, Cites Irregularities in Malawi 2025 Polls

By Suleman Chitera

United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has raised serious concerns over the credibility of the 2025 Malawi elections, stressing that national progress can only be achieved if elections are won fairly and not through the influence of money.

Muluzi expressed disappointment, saying the hopes of many Malawians have been shaken by the unfolding events in the electoral process. According to him, the irregularities threaten the integrity of Malawi’s democracy and the people’s trust in the system.

UDF Reports Electoral Irregularities

The UDF leader revealed that his party has documented several irregularities in Mangochi, Blantyre, Zomba, Balaka, and Machinga districts.

Some of the key issues include:

Vote figures that do not match the number of registered voters.

Technical failures of election machines.

Alteration of vote tallies and discrepancies in official results.

Muluzi confirmed that the UDF has submitted evidence of these irregularities to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for urgent review.

Call for Transparency and Recount

Muluzi has demanded that MEC release copies of presidential results from the affected districts that have not been signed by presiding officers. He further called for a recount of votes in all five districts to ensure credibility.

At the same time, Muluzi instructed UDF lawyers to prepare for possible legal action should MEC fail to address the issues satisfactorily. He emphasized that the party is determined to pursue justice in the courts if necessary.

MEC Urged to Act Swiftly

The UDF leader appealed to MEC to quickly investigate and correct the irregularities to restore public trust in the electoral process. He warned that failure to act decisively could deepen political tensions and weaken Malawi’s democratic foundation.
