Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha says bold food security measures are underway to stabilize prices and restore confidence in Malawi’s agricultural system.

In a surprising turn for agro-traders banking on maize scarcity to drive up prices, the Malawi Government has announced plans to flood the market with maize, effectively curbing hoarding and price manipulation.

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Joseph Mwanamvekha revealed that the government, with support from development partners, is set to purchase and distribute maize nationwide.

“Any trader refusing to release or hoarding maize risks heavy losses when new stocks hit the market,” warned Mwanamvekha.

The minister said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to protect vulnerable households from food insecurity and strengthen agricultural resilience amid economic challenges and climate-related shocks.

Restoring Confidence in Food Security Systems

Speaking on his early days in office, Mwanamvekha emphasized that the administration is taking bold steps to restore order, accountability, and transparency in the national food supply chain.

He noted that the government’s plan includes short-term interventions such as maize stabilization programs and long-term strategies aimed at improving mega farms, agricultural cooperatives, and the Affordable Inputs Program (AIP).

Addressing IMVAC Report Findings

Referring to the latest Integrated Food Security and Vulnerability Assessment (IMVAC) Report, Mwanamvekha acknowledged gaps in existing agricultural policies and pledged swift reforms.

“We are working to restore the order that has been lost, as exposed in the IMVAC report — particularly in the mismanagement of programs like AIP and mega farms,” he said.

The minister further assured the public that the government’s maize distribution plan will ensure stable food prices and enhanced access to affordable grain across rural and urban communities.
