Peter Mutharika Leads in Early 2025 Malawi Election Results as MEC Releases More Updates

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has released more official results from the September 2025 General Elections, with early figures showing former President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the lead.

According to MEC’s latest update, Mutharika has so far secured 203,440 votes, placing him ahead of Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who has amassed 153,447 votes.

MEC Releases Results from More Councils

The commission confirmed that results released today include tallies from Karonga Town Council, Zomba City, Ntchisi, Salima, and Neno.
This follows the previous day’s announcement of results from Mwanza, Likoma, Kasungu Municipality, and Luchenza.

What the Results Mean

While these figures are partial and not the final tally, they give an early indication of voter preferences in the 2025 elections. With both major contenders—Mutharika and Chakwera—still in close competition, the final outcome will depend on results from the remaining districts.

MEC Urges Patience

The electoral body has reminded Malawians that the process of collecting, verifying, and announcing results is ongoing and that the official winner will only be declared once all constituencies have been tallied and verified.
