The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter has commended local media houses for the professional role they are playing in keeping Malawians informed about the ongoing electoral process.
MISA Malawi Chairperson, Golden Matonga, told Luntha Online that many journalists have demonstrated remarkable professionalism by delivering accurate and timely updates on election developments while the nation awaits the official results from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).Peter Mutharika Opens Huge Lead in Malawi Presidential Election Results
“Despite facing obstacles and even threats, journalists have not abandoned their duty. We have received reports of intimidation in some areas, but media practitioners have remained steadfast, continuing to provide credible coverage. We also want to recognize media outlets such as Luntha Television for consistently distinguishing between confirmed and unconfirmed results, ensuring that Malawians are not misled,” Matonga said.
Over the years, MISA Malawi has been training its members on ethical and responsible reporting, especially during elections. Matonga noted that these efforts are now bearing fruit, with journalists adhering to professional standards and the law in their reporting.
As the country waits anxiously for MEC’s final announcements, the role of the media in promoting transparency, trust, and accountability remains central to the democratic process
