Outgoing President Chakwera and MCP Under Fire After Thugs Attack DPP Supporters at Mbowe, Lilongwe

Lilongwe, Malawi – Malawi is witnessing rising political tensions after supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were violently attacked by suspected Malawi Congress Party (MCP) thugs at Mbowe in Lilongwe. The attack, which left several DPP supporters injured, has sparked outrage as police reportedly failed to arrest the perpetrators.

Eyewitnesses say that the assault appeared highly organized, pointing to the involvement of MCP cadres aligned with outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera. Victims recount that the attackers used sticks, stones, and other weapons, deliberately targeting DPP supporters during what was meant to be a peaceful gathering.

Outgoing President Chakwera and MCP Accused

Critics argue that President Chakwera’s MCP has created a political climate where intimidation and violence against opposition supporters are tolerated, if not encouraged. “This is no random incident. It’s part of a pattern of aggression from MCP supporters under Chakwera’s watch,” said a DPP official present at the scene.

The failure of police to arrest any suspects has further fueled public anger, with many accusing law enforcement of selective enforcement favoring the ruling party. Opposition leaders warn that such inaction undermines Malawi’s democratic principles and emboldens thugs to carry out attacks with impunity.

Civil Society Condemns Political Violence

Human rights groups and civil society organizations have condemned the violence, urging outgoing President Chakwera and MCP leadership to take responsibility. “Malawi cannot continue down a path where political allegiance determines safety,” said one advocacy group spokesperson. “The victims of Mbowe deserve justice, and the perpetrators must face the law immediately.”

Implications for Malawi’s Democracy

Political violence, particularly by ruling party affiliates, threatens Malawi’s democratic stability. Analysts warn that if MCP continues to tolerate or orchestrate attacks on opposition supporters, the nation risks a dangerous escalation of unrest ahead of future elections.

Calls for Immediate Action

DPP leaders are demanding urgent arrests and prosecution of those behind the Mbowe attack, while also calling on outgoing President Chakwera to publicly condemn the violence. Citizens are increasingly questioning the neutrality of the police and demanding reforms to ensure safety and fair treatment for all political supporters.
