Gender Activists Applaud DPP for Appointing Two Women as Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament

By Suleman Chitera

Gender rights activists have welcomed the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for appointing Patricia Wiskes and Martha Ngwira as Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament, respectively — a move they say promotes inclusive leadership and strengthens women’s participation in decision-making positions.

Maggie Kathewera Banda, Coordinator for the Women’s Manifesto Movement and Executive Director of the NGO-Gender Coordination Network, described the appointments as a commendable step forward in advancing gender equality in political spaces.

“The appointment of women to such influential positions demonstrates the DPP’s commitment to gender inclusivity and leadership diversity. We now expect the upcoming Cabinet to also reflect the principles outlined in Malawi’s Gender Equality Act,” said Kathewera Banda.

Gender expert Dalitso Baloyi echoed similar sentiments, noting that while the appointments are a positive milestone, more efforts are needed to achieve the 40:60 gender representation ratio stipulated in Malawi’s national policies.

“This is an encouraging start, but sustainable gender balance will require continuous political will and policy enforcement,” Baloyi emphasized.

The announcement comes as preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of Members of Parliament ahead of the 52nd Session of Parliament.

Observers say the move could signal a renewed push by the DPP to align with gender equality frameworks and international development goals, positioning the party as a progressive force in Malawi’s evolving political landscape.
