President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to regional unity and cooperation during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, held virtually.

The President said the meeting was an important platform for addressing critical issues affecting the Southern African region, including peace, political stability, and sustainable development.

In his address to the Summit, President Mutharika emphasised the need for unity among SADC member states, noting that the strength of the regional bloc lies in its collective resolve to tackle challenges together.

He stated that regional solidarity is essential in achieving lasting peace and prosperity across Southern Africa, calling upon all member states to prioritise cooperation over division.

“As leaders, we must all work together to ensure that our states are united, stable, and development-focused,” President Mutharika said, adding that regional progress depends on the strength of partnerships among member nations.

In his capacity as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, the Malawian leader addressed the ongoing political tension in Madagascar.

He expressed concern that instability in Madagascar could have ripple effects across the region and urged swift, coordinated action to restore peace and the rule of law.

President Mutharika said that SADC cannot afford to ignore any political crisis within the region, as such tensions undermine the shared goal of achieving a peaceful and prosperous Southern Africa.

The President also took the opportunity to express gratitude to SADC for the vital role the organisation played during Malawi’s recent general election.

He acknowledged the regional body’s contribution in promoting transparency and credibility throughout the electoral process, saying its presence helped ensure a peaceful outcome.

President Mutharika commended SADC’s continued dedication to fostering democratic governance and stability among its member states.

He concluded by reiterating Malawi’s unwavering commitment to advancing the shared vision of peace, security, and sustainable development within the SADC region.

The virtual Summit brought together Heads of State and Government to deliberate on pressing political and security issues affecting member countries and to chart a way forward for regional integration.
