Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Dr. Joseph Mwnamvekha, saysi t is a known fact that the MCP administration under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera left a high national debit situation which is unsustainable in line with the country’s economy.

Mwanamvekha said the MCP took a significant portion of national budget resources for personal gains other than those which Parliament allocated to implement equally important projects in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Speaking in Parliament when he presented the Mid- Year Budget, Mwanamvekha said Malawi’s public resources is in excess of K21.6 trillion which is equivalent to 86 percent of GDP against K4.1 trillion left by the DPP and Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in 2019.

Mwanamvekha said the MCP government under President Chakwera multiplied the public debt by five times in a period of 5 years in government and the devaluation of the local currency- Malawi Kwacha was the order of the day causing many poor people suffering.

A Concerned citizen of Malawi from Area 51 in Lilongwe Mrs. Elizabeth Kaliza Banda said MCP will be remembered as the wasteful government the country has ever had since the dawn of multiparty politics and democracy in Malawi.

Kaliza said MCP has nothing to show on the ground of what they have done with K21.6 trillion debit claiming that most of this money entered into the crooked pockets of MCP ministers and senior government officials for mansions in towns.

She has asked Parliament to call President Chakwera to explain to Malawians the development projects the MCP implemented in his 5 years stay in government to match with public debt saying this has chained all Malawians.

The citizen said MCP entered into government not for servant leadership as President Chakwera used to tell Malawians but thieving in government observing that some ministers and senior government officials have over a night turned themselves as billionaires in a poor country- Malawi.
Kaliza said it is sad that with this whooping national debt of K21.6 trillion, hospitals have been running without medical drugs, patients are being sent back home for no medications and some have died as a result of no medicines in hospitals.

“President Chakwera and his thieving MCP lieutenants were all over the country campaigning to bounce back into government to kill Malawians,” said Kaliza.

She has called for a lifestyle audit of the K21.6 trillion and a forensic investigation to bring to book all those that have benefited from huge public debt the country is in and freezing all of their accounts in banks across the country.

Kaliza said she would be happy for government to produce a list of all people that have benefited from K21.6 trillion public debit to choose for themselves imprisonment or paying back the money they stole from the poor people in Malawi saying this is one way of recovering the money.

She has advised government not to send the culprits to Prison but instead, confiscate their property to recover stolen money lamenting that there is no way the country can be labelled poor by politicians while the same politicians are thieving in government to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor people in Malawi.
