Lilongwe, Malawi — Outrage is swelling among Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters as former President Lazarus Chakwera faces accusations of abandoning his own cabinet ministers, now languishing in police cells.
Voices from within the party are sharp and unforgiving. “Chakwera has shown his true colors,” said one MCP loyalist who spoke on condition of anonymity. “He has no love for his own team. While his ministers and party stalwarts face arrest and intimidation, he is overseas enjoying his holiday. This is shameful. This is evil.”
The arrests come amid heightened political tension, with several high-profile MCP figures detained for reasons many see as politically motivated. Chakwera, who once led the party with fanfare and promised solidarity, now faces a storm of criticism for what supporters describe as “cowardice” and “betrayal.”
“This is not just bad manners; it is a betrayal of trust,” said another supporter. “A leader who abandons his own people in their darkest hour has no claim to loyalty or respect.”
Analysts say this development could erode Chakwera’s standing within the party, as grassroots supporters demand accountability and solidarity from their leadership. The question now is whether Chakwera will return to defend his team—or continue to leave them to face the full force of the law alone.
MCP supporters are calling for immediate action, insisting that leaders must face challenges alongside their followers, not leave them to bear the consequences alone.
