Lilongwe — The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has moved decisively against non-compliant traders, confiscating assorted cosmetic products from China Wave Shop in Lilongwe and slapping the outlet with a K500,000 fine for flouting labelling regulations.

The seized cosmetics, according to MBS, were found to be improperly labelled, a violation that raises serious consumer safety concerns and breaches national standards governing the sale of regulated products.

The enforcement action forms part of an ongoing market surveillance exercise being carried out across shops in the Capital City, as MBS tightens its grip on traders selling goods that may endanger public health.

MBS officials say the operation is targeting businesses suspected of selling expired, banned or substandard products, while also assessing storage conditions and compliance with mandatory labelling requirements, particularly for cosmetics and other sensitive consumer goods.

Improper labelling, MBS warns, deprives consumers of critical information such as ingredients, usage instructions, manufacturing dates and expiry details—exposing the public to potential health risks including skin reactions and long-term complications.

The Bureau has issued a stern warning to traders countrywide, stressing that non-compliance will attract penalties, seizures and possible prosecution.

MBS has since urged consumers to remain vigilant and report suspected substandard or improperly labelled products, as the crackdown on errant traders intensifies.
