Malawians Reject Court-Ordered Payout as Pressure Mounts on Reserve Bank and Attorney General

By Suleman Chitera

A wave of public outrage is sweeping across Malawi following a controversial court ruling directing the to release huge sums of public money to in a long-running legal dispute.

Concerned citizens, civil society voices, and political commentators have strongly appealed to the Reserve Bank not to release any funds, warning that the payout would amount to a reckless hemorrhage of taxpayers’ money at a time when the country is struggling with economic hardship, shortages of essential commodities, and rising poverty levels.

Malawians argue that the decision is yet another example of how state institutions are being used to benefit a few at the expense of millions. They question the moral and legal justification of forcing a public institution to settle questionable claims while ordinary Malawians endure fuel scarcity, food insecurity, and a collapsing cost of living.

“Public funds must be protected at all costs. Malawi cannot continue to reward questionable deals while hospitals lack drugs and farmers lack support,” one concerned citizen remarked.

Attorney General Under Fire

The controversy has also reignited fierce criticism of the , with growing calls for the Head of State to dismiss the current office bearer and appoint a competent, fearless, and corruption-fighting legal mind.

Critics accuse the Attorney General of failing to adequately defend the interests of Malawians in high-stakes legal battles, allowing the country to be exposed to massive financial losses through weak legal strategy, negligence, or possible complicity.

According to public sentiment, Malawi does not need an Attorney General who merely occupies an office, but one who:

  • Aggressively protects national resources
  • Challenges dubious claims against the state
  • Acts independently without political or corporate influence
  • Leads the fight against corruption, not enabling it

A Test of Leadership and Accountability

This unfolding saga is increasingly being viewed as a defining test of leadership, institutional integrity, and commitment to fighting corruption in .

Malawians are watching closely to see whether those entrusted with power will rise to the occasion or once again allow public resources to be siphoned away under the cover of legal technicalities.

The message from the public is loud and unmistakable:
Protect public funds. Stop institutional capture. Remove incompetence. Fight corruption—without fear or favour.

Failure to act decisively, many warn, will only deepen public mistrust and further erode confidence in the country’s governance and justice systems.
