The Malawi Government has assured farmers and the nation that long-awaited farmgate prices for major crops will be announced before the end of this week, signaling a critical step in the country’s agricultural marketing season.

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Roza Fatch Mbilizi, made the announcement in Parliament, emphasizing that all technical and preparatory processes have already been completed. According to the Minister, what remains is the final stage of official approval, after which the prices will be immediately made public.

The delay in releasing farmgate prices had raised growing concern among stakeholders, particularly farmers who have already begun harvesting crops and, in some areas, engaging with private traders offering competitive but often unregulated prices. The absence of officially gazetted prices has historically exposed farmers to exploitation, with middlemen taking advantage of uncertainty in the market.

Mbilizi moved to calm these concerns, assuring lawmakers and the public that the government is fully aware of the urgency surrounding the matter.

“I want to assure Parliament and all Malawians that the farmgate prices will be released before or by the end of this week. Everything is ready; we are just waiting for the final approvals,” she said.

The Minister further confirmed that Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) is fully prepared to begin purchasing crops immediately after the prices are announced. This readiness is expected to provide a structured and reliable market for farmers, particularly smallholder producers who depend heavily on ADMARC as a buyer of last resort.

The role of ADMARC is especially significant in stabilizing agricultural markets and ensuring food security. Once operational, the corporation is expected to offer standardized prices across the country, helping to curb price distortions and reduce the influence of speculative trading practices.

The anticipated announcement comes at a crucial time when many farmers across Malawi are entering peak harvesting periods for staple crops such as maize, groundnuts, and soybeans. Timely price communication is essential not only for protecting farmers’ incomes but also for guiding national food supply dynamics and market planning.

Agricultural analysts note that the government’s adherence to the promised timeline will be key in restoring confidence among farmers, many of whom have in previous seasons expressed frustration over delayed price announcements. Early and transparent pricing is also seen as a critical component in strengthening Malawi’s agricultural value chains and improving rural livelihoods.

As the week progresses, attention will now be focused on the government’s follow-through, with farmers, traders, and policymakers alike awaiting the official figures that will shape the agricultural economy in the months ahead.
