The landmark decision was endorsed during the association’s executive committee meeting held on Saturday, 9 May 2026, as part of broader efforts to strengthen player development and improve the competitiveness of Malawian football.

Football analysts believe the initiative could help clubs develop stronger squads, improve tactical consistency, and increase opportunities for youth players who often struggle for game time in top-flight teams.
Under the proposed structure, reserve teams will remain directly linked to their senior clubs. As preparations continue ahead of the official launch, FAM has also announced plans to introduce a Reserve Cup competition.
