The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has officially launched the implementation plan for Executive Order No. 2, a directive aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene standards across Malawi.

The order, issued by President Peter Mutharika on March 1, 2026, mandates all public spaces, schools, and workplaces to install and maintain adequate sanitation and waste management facilities. These include proper toilets, handwashing stations, and clearly designated waste disposal bins.

Speaking during the launch event in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Minister of Health and Sanitation Madalitso Baloyi emphasized that the initiative is aligned with both national development goals and global targets for universal access to sanitation. She stressed that the government will strictly enforce compliance to safeguard public health and prevent sanitation-related diseases.

Baloyi highlighted that poor sanitation remains a major risk factor for outbreaks such as cholera, adding that the new plan is a proactive step toward creating cleaner and healthier communities nationwide.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to supporting the initiative. He said local councils will receive supplementary services and resources to ensure the successful rollout of the plan at grassroots level.

As part of the launch, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation handed over eight waste collection vehicles, which will be distributed to central hospitals and city councils to strengthen waste management systems.

The event also featured a practical demonstration of the initiative, with Minister Baloyi leading a community cleaning exercise at M’buka Ward, Phwetekere Market in Area 36, Lilongwe.
