Political tensions are continuing to rise in Malawi following rumours that the government is planning to arrest former President Lazarus Chakwera, a development that has triggered strong reactions from opposition supporters and intensified the already fragile relationship between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The speculation, which has dominated political discussions throughout the week, prompted dozens of MCP supporters to gather at Chakwera’s residence, claiming they are prepared to protect the former head of state from what they describe as politically motivated intimidation.
Government spokesperson Shadric Namalomba has strongly denied the allegations, insisting that there is no plan to arrest Chakwera. Namalomba accused MCP of creating unnecessary political drama aimed at gaining public sympathy after losing power.Inside Malawi’s K6.2 Billion COVID-19 Scandal: How Chakwera’s Administration Failed to Protect Public Funds
According to Namalomba, the opposition should focus on national development instead of fueling political tension and uncertainty among Malawians.
However, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has maintained that the fears are genuine, arguing that governments rarely admit to politically sensitive operations before they happen. Kabwila further declared that MCP supporters would continue guarding Chakwera’s home and were ready to be arrested alongside him if authorities proceeded with the alleged plan.MCP, Chakwera files lawsuit against DPP, Mutharika
The standoff has sparked wider debate across the country about political tolerance, democracy, and the role of state institutions in handling opposition figures after elections or political transitions.
Political analysts say the situation reflects growing mistrust between the country’s major political parties, especially following the events of May 14, which continue to generate controversy and speculation within Malawi’s political landscape.

National Elections Systems Trust (NEST) executive director Unandi Banda warned that any move to arrest Chakwera could further polarize the nation and damage public confidence in democratic institutions. Banda stressed the importance of restraint, dialogue, and adherence to the rule of law to avoid escalating political instability.
Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether tensions cool down or evolve into a larger political confrontation. Many Malawians are now closely watching both the government and opposition leadership for signals of compromise, accountability, and national unity.
